I've been tinkering with:

http://www.delgine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2634

And thought it would be cool to create an 8 sided cylinder to merge into some of the extruded cube. Problem I have run into is the snap to grid doesn't seem to function on the cylinder, does snap to not work on non-cube primitives? Confused

Cube is the only primitive that can snap by default and not lose it's shape.
If you want to snap something else, right click with it selected, and choose a different snapping mode for it in the object's properties.
