I don't know how many people here actually ever played LucasArt's dark forces II, or edited it, or remember Alexi's wonderful editor JED - but this was my favorite level editor of all time.
Specifically because I really liked the "cleave" command. I noticed people have talked about adding verticies by clicking, this is a lot like that. I actually happen to have a picture of a cleave in progress:
Note: you could also cleave surfaces, I liked to do this to help add dimension to the background geometry. You could create a pattern like this on the wall:
and from far away (textured) it would look like a mountain range with sky behind it.
Now I know from using the lite version that similar effects can be achieved, just not with the same elegance =] I recently purchased the PRO version, and I'm very happy with it. But am I missing the feature that does this without having to build another object to act as a knife and using the subtract methods? The only things I can think of take 10 steps to perform, for such a simple task.
Can someone help me figure out how to achieve this in DeleD PRO?
PS. JED was a level editor written in Delphi 2 about 10 years ago (lol) And is now open source.
While this function may seem simple, maybe even useless - it was the most useful tool for me =(. I've never really gotten the hang of brush editing, thats why I was really drawn to deled. It's powerful, easy to use, and it functions in a lot of the ways I"m used to. I just wish it had cleave.[/url]

Moved to DeleD Feature Requests.
Interesting feature. So with this you can cut pieces ouf ot polygons by dragging lines with your mouse? _________________ Behold! The DeleD Wiki! Please help us expanding it

The clipper! This has been brought up before. But the CSG stuff can do the same thing I think. _________________

This can definitely be done with the CSG however it takes so long just to make a simple cleave and all the calculations. For example, just to cut off a corner i would need to build a new piece of geometry, position it, then wait for the CSG to do all that dialog work. It's overkill for my purpose.
But yes, the "cleave" is allowing you to create a plane using your mouse. This plane will create vertices anywhere it intersects with the geometry. Unlike the CSG it doesn't change the actual geometry - just adds more vertices. But you can use this to, for example, cleave a surface (add vertices vertically then horizontally along a face) to make a single inset surface for a doorway, or whatever. You could also cleave corners off a box to round it out.
So say from the top down view you drag your mouse from (1,1) to (-1,-1) this will create a plane extending along the Y-Axis along the line y=mx+b (slope = -1,-1, y-intercept 0) and anywhere this plane intersects active geometry (edges) it adds a vertex.
Pretty simple concept, especially if you limit this to the 3 main views (top down, side, front). Angling causes a little more interesting calculations, but I"m not opposed to being limited to these three views. However, I don't know how this translates to DeleD internally.
I know you guys are really busy developing DeleD and everything, I know you are probably really bogged down. I will pay for this feature, if that makes it more enticing to add it. It would be really extra helpful to me!
To help better understand this feature, I took a little video capture of me using it:
JED (new version called Zed) Video - Cleave in Action (~6mb)
edit: I've just noticed other people have suggested it. In any event, It's apparent this feature has been noted by the developers. And my offer for a monetary reward, stands. I mean, I'm no money bags, but this feature would increase my productivity so much, it's worth it. But no pressure, I'm already a satisfied customer, and looking at your to do list, I am not envious in the least bit =P |
